Project: The Las Vegas Influence on Absolutely Everything
The Nevada Test Site was opened on the 11th January 1951 and is still functioning today. Area 15, the Test Site, is 65 Miles North of Las Vegas and has been featured in Las Vegas history for many decades. The atomic era was a response to the cold war and was seen as a patriotic endeavor, in Las Vegas it was a tourist attraction. Blast parties were scheduled for the test blasts that occurred on a regular basis and were clearly visible from Las Vegas hotel rooftops and pools. The way each test blast was named is also fascinating, starting firstly with alphabetically listed names, i.e. Able and then Baker, but that system quickly broke down due to the sheer number of tests. Buster Jangle had a yield likened to 31 kilotonnes of TNT, it was filmed and photographed, and this pattern is taken from one photograph taken as the mushroom cloud built.
